ACC - American Chemistry Council

Definition The American Chemistry Council, ACC, is an organization that represents the chemical industry on public policy issues, coordinates the industry's research and testing programs, and administers the industry's environmental, health, and safety performance improvement initiative, known as Responsible Care. Their web site is http://www.americanchemistry.com/. The ACC was formerly known as the Chemical Manufacturer's Association. They changed their name in 2000. Additional Info In 1999, the ACC committed more than $100 million over five years to fund health and environmental research related to chemical use. This research focuses on potential effects that chemicals may have on human health and the environment, an effort they term Reponsible Care. In addition, the Council is committed to public health initiatives that are based on scientific research, valid chemical testing and responsible manufacturing practices. The Council is a good source of information if you are seeking information about the industrial use of chemicals.

MSDS Relevance An affiliate of the ACC is CHEMTREC, which offers services to shippers and carriers of hazardous materials such as DOT compliance. Many companies have contracted with CHEMTREC to provide toll-free, 24-hour emergency response information and technical support in the event of a hazardous material accident. CHEMTREC's web site is www.chemtrec.org There is no charge to call this number in an emergency and the emergency responders do not need to be registered with CHEMTREC to access the information. Of course, the authors of the MSDS must register their information beforehand (see below). In the event of a chemical emergency in the U.S. or Canada call (800) 424-9300. CHEMTREC representatives have access to approximately 3,000,000 MSDS's as well as professionals capable of assisting firefighters, EMT's and other emergency responders. If you are writing your own MSDS, you need to provide a 24-hour emergency contact number that can provide additional information beyond that found on the MSDS. Most companies do not have such expertise in-house, however, CHEMTREC can act as the 24-hour contact phone number and emergency assistance liaison for as little as $500 a year.
